History:
In 1960, the Department of "Biology and Chemistry" of the Karaganda Pedagogical Institute was divided into two independent departments of "Chemistry" and "Zoology", the head of the Department of Zoology was Candidate of Biological Sciences N.B. Shlykov (1960-1967). In 1965, the Department of "Zoology" was divided into two departments: "Zoology" and "Human and Animal Physiology". For many years (from 1965 to 1981), the Department of Zoology was headed by Associate Professor, Candidate of Biological Sciences T. I. Aubakirov.
In 1973, a postgraduate course was opened at the Department of "Zoology", where, under the guidance of Associate Professor, Candidate of Biological Sciences T.I. Aubakirov, Z.B. Bekishbekov, K. B. Bekishev, and V.G. Nikolayev defended their PhD theses.
In 1976, the Zoological museum was established at the Department of Zoology on the initiative and with the active organizational work of T. I. Aubakirov. During the year, more than 400 exhibits were collected in the collection fund of this museum. In 1996, under the leadership of the dean of the faculty N. T. Yerzhanov and the director of the museum M. A. Konev, the museum was transformed and renovated and began to function as a Museum of Nature.
In different years, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor V.I. Kapitonov, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor N.P. Slavchenko, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor N.T. Yerzhanov, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor T.B. Balmagambet, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor R.G. Meiramova, Doctor of Biological Sciences M.R. Khanturin, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor L.V. Sosnovskaya, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor N.M. Myrzakhanov, Ph.D., Associate Professor Kystaubayeva Z.T., Ph.D., Associate Professor Zhuzbayeva G.O., Ph.D., Associate Professor Kartbayeva G.T. were the heads of the Department of Zoology.
The basis of the teaching staff of the Department of Zoology for many years were specialists-zoologists: Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor V.I. Kapitonov, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor N. P. Slavchenko, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor T. B. Balmagambet, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor M. K. Utebaeva.
Scientists of the department conducted a long-term ecological and biological survey of the territory of the Karaganda region, which served as the basis for writing many dissertations and collections of scientific papers: "Ecology of Central Kazakhstan" (2001), "Rare and endangered animals of the Kazakh small-leaved forest" (2005), "Karaganda. Karaganda region: Encyclopedia" (2008). Specialists of the department have repeatedly given advice to solve environmental and agricultural problems of the Karaganda region.

Teachers:
Today, the department employs 17 teachers, of whom 61% have a scientific degree. The department employs specialists-methodologists, whose textbooks and manuals are well known in our area. The department successfully implements a program of multilingual education and trains biology teachers with knowledge of English. The demand for graduates of the department reaches 80%.

Accreditation and leadership:
All programs of the department are accredited by the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education, they are among the best programs in the national rankings of 2020.
