It was opened by the order of the rector (No. 65 of April 02) in 2003 on the basis of the Archeology Department of Central Kazakhstan of Academician E.A. Buketov KSU, as an independent structural research unit of the university, in order to increase the effectiveness of specialized archaeological research.

The structure of the institute includes the museum of archeology and ethnography.

Tasks:

• identification of new archaeological monuments and scientific excavations;
• carrying out fundamental and applied research in the field of archeology based on a comprehensive study of archaeological cultures and monuments;
• carrying out an archaeological examination of construction, land reclamation, prospecting and other works related to the use of land in order to identify archaeological monuments that are threatened with destruction;

Scientific achievements:

As a result of our research, a significant corpus of new archaeological sources has been obtained and systematized, unique archaeological artifacts have been collected, including the only metal vessel for steppe Eurasia dating back to the 20th century B.C., as well as a rare complex of weapons from the Middle Bronze Age. In 2016, the discovery of the so-called "Kazakhstan pyramid" (the construction of the Begazy-Dandybaev era of the 15th century B.C. at the Karazhartas burial ground in the Shet district of the Karaganda region) gained wide international fame.

Among the most significant scientific achievements are the following:

• introduction into scientific circulation of fundamentally new historical and cultural information about the technology and cultural traditions of pottery of the Middle and Late Bronze Age, as well as the Early Iron Age;
• study of the monuments of the early stage of the Alakul culture of the Bronze Age, associated with the spread of horse chariots;
• reconstruction of the female costume of the Bronze Age;
• study of the monuments of the Begazy-Dandybaev culture of the end of the Bronze Age.
• allocation of a special, Dongal, type of ceramics, linking the culture of the final of the Bronze Age with the Early Iron Age. The legitimacy of the allocation was confirmed by the discovery of monuments with Dongal ceramics in other regions of Kazakhstan, as well as in the Altai Territory of Russia.
