Educational activities of the Department of Russian Language and Literature named after Professor G.A. Meiramov is aimed at training specialists in three educational programs: "Russian language and literature"; "Russian language and literature in schools with non-Russian language of instruction", "Philology". Upon completion of the undergraduate program, graduates of the department can continue their studies in the magistracy in the educational programs "Russian Language and Literature" and "Applied Philology", as well as enroll in doctoral studies in the program "Philology" (the philological faculty has a council for the defense of doctoral dissertations).

The main course of education within the framework of these educational programs are: training of teachers in the Russian language and literature, including in schools with a non-Russian language of instruction, “Russian as a foreign language”, “Translation studies”, “Editing”, “Forensic linguistics”.

The bachelor's degree programs include such relevant and practice-oriented disciplines as "Methodological Foundations of Modern Translation Studies", "Theory and Practice of Translation", "Theory and Methods of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language", "Professionally oriented teaching of Russian as a foreign language", "Theoretical and Applied Linguistics”, “Linguistic Expertise”, “Linguistic Conflictology”, “Psychology of Literary Creativity”. Students on master's programs will be able to receive training in such disciplines as "Theory of Text and Discourse", "Theory and Practice of Advertising", "Philological Support of the Media", "Theory of Communication and Language Manipulation", "Speechwriting and Media Speechwriting".

Graduates of the department will be able to work in educational institutions (general education schools, teacher-training colleges, institutes for advanced training and retraining of teachers, education departments). The main professional focus of education specialties is teaching the Russian language and literature in educational institutions, including as a foreign and/or second language; administration in the field of education (departments of secondary, secondary vocational and higher education); other areas of social and humanitarian activities (intercultural communication, etc.).

Professional field of graduates’ activity of the specialties "Philology" and "Applied Philology" is science (employee of research institutions); culture (employee of cultural institutions); publishing (proofreader, editor of publishing products); Mass media, including the Internet (editorial staff of newspapers, radio, television, magazines); education (teacher of secondary and secondary specialized educational institutions).

The scientific interests of the department are related to the development of such areas as: problems of the theory and history of Russian literature, problems of the genre and style of Russian and Western European literature, theoretical problems of ontology and epistemology of language, linguodidactic foundations of teaching Russian language and literature at school and university, comparison of different system languages as linguistic base of teaching the Russian language, structural and semantic analysis of inter-level connections of linguistic units, problems of the functioning and development of the Russian language in conditions of multilingualism.
